Chevy Lumina Engine Noise And Code P0440

1996 Chevrolet Lumina. 3.1 V6 Check Engine Light Just did a fresh oil change. I just changed the oil on my Lumina. I used 10w-40, as I always have. I found a filter in the trunk of my car, presumed it hadn't been used ( no sign of oil on/in it). After the change, the car has a rough start, and makes a light knocking noise. This noise can be heard for the first maybe 50-60 seconds, after it kicks out. Is it possible that something wasn't put on tight enough? I checked and tightened everything. Could a bad filter be the result. I'm hoping its not a bent push-rod ( don't think it is, because it happened after the oil change). Any ideas?

Answer:
It is possible that you have the wrong oil filter or that there was something in the oil filter that was sitting in your trunk. If there was some dirt, or even a bug in the oil filter, there is no telling where it may have ended up in the oiling system.

You need to have further diag to see where the noise is coming from, then find out why. May take some engine disassembly to trace it down. The check engine light is probably misfire trouble codes.

Question:
1997 Chevy Lumina Engine size 3.1L. SES computer codes P0440. I keep getting a code P0440 code. Is there any typical problems with the 1997 Lumina related to this code? Also, Check Engine light. Where is the Location of Knock Sensor? How many knock sensor have on this vehicle?

Answer:
Code P0440 is a general Evaporative emissions system leak. Check the gas cap for being loose or having a bad seal. This is common. Also a bad vent valve will cause this.

Question: Lately, I've been noticing that once I get my Lumina up above 65 mph, on the highway, theres a really annoying rattle in the rear. It sounds almost as if it could be my rear struts/suspension on its way out? I've read that it could also be caused by a warped rim, or issue with tire. Whats your stand on this.

Answer:
A bent rim, or a tire problem will usually give a vibration. If it is severe enough, it can cause a rattle. Would definitely check for tire or rim problem. A loose strut/shock would rattle if there was a problem with a tire/rim. Also check for a foreign object in the tire tread, like a nail or something larger.

1998 Chevy Lumina Question:
Which sensor is above the starter on this car?

Answer: I believe you are looking at the knock sensor. That would be a 1- wire sensor. If you could send us a picture, we can tell you for sure. Different years have sensors in different spots. This 3800 V6 can have either one or two. If the code you have is for position 1 or 2 then you have 2. They are located on the side of the block. On the front,it is near the starter, on the rear it is between the engine and transmission. That one is quite hard to see and get to.

Question:
When stepping on the brake pedal, getting a clicking sound like a relay is opening and closing. Brakes work fine. Remove fuse for the ABS and clicking stops. Replace fuse and it starts again. Is very annoying. Car belonged to my deceased Dad and wish to sell but can't due to noise.

Answer:
There is really nothing under the dash electrically for the ABS system. Noises are the hardest to diagnose without actually hearing it. What you may be hearing is a loose gear in the bottom side of the ABS motor pack. This pack is bolted to the master cylinder under the hood, and the sound may seem like it is under the dash. 1 of the 3 gears on the bottom of the motor pack may have come loose because of a loose nut. These gears spin and may be the noise you are hearing. The cover would need to come off to check for that.

Sometimes a tech can remove the cover with everything still bolted together, but it is very tricky, since the TORX bolts go up from the bottom. May be necessary to remove the ABS assembly to get to it.

I suggest having someone listen to the noise to see if it is in this area when the noise is happening. Front wheels off the ground with jack stands to simulate car moving.
