P0716: Transmission Input Speed Sensor Circuit Intermittent

What Does Code P0716 Mean?

The Transmission input speed sensor is a hall effect style sensor. The sensor is mounted to the upper valve body assembly and connects to the control solenoid valve assembly via a wiring harness and connector. The sensor watches the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch housing toothed gear. The ISS receives between 8.3 and 9.3 volts from the Input / Output Speed Sensor supply voltage circuit from the Transmission control module (TCM) or from the PCM. As the clutch housings rotate, the sensor produces a signal frequency based on the gear teeth of the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch housing. That signal is then transmitted through the ISS signal circuit to the control solenoid valve. The control solenoid valve assembly uses the ISS signal to determine fluid line pressure, transmission shifting patterns, torque converter clutch (TCC) slipping speed and the gear ratio.

How Is Code Detected

Diagnostic Trouble Code P0716 is detected when trans control module (TCM) or PCM did not receive the proper or intermittant signal from the sensor depending on what gear the transmission is in and what the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is reading.

Code P0716 Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Shifting problem

Common Causes of P0716

  • Faulty transmission input speed sensor (ISS)
  • Input speed sensor harness open or short
  • Poor electrcial connection
  • A broken tooth on the sensor gear

How to Diagnose P0716

Diagnosis of code P0716 is a little involved. You would need to use a volt / ohm meter and transmission wiring schematic. You will need to find the correct pin terminals that feed the sensor in the transmission external electrical connector. You would then test for continuity through the internal circuit and sensor and also the signal generated when spinning the drive wheels. Watching the sensor signal can also be done while watching live transmission data on a scanner if you have one. If a problem is found, then further diagnosis will lead you or a mechanic to checking the wiring all the way into the transmission and the sensor itself for proper signal output.

What Will Fix Code P0716?

There may be a service bulletin for this code depending on your vehice make and model. ust call your local dealer with your vehicle VIN number, tell them you have code P0716 and they will be able to run a search to see if this service bulletin applies to your vehicle. If no bulletin exists for your vehicle then proper diagnosis described above would be need. A trans mechanic may be your best bet unless you are familiar with testing procedures. Be sure to clear all codes when done with repairs.
