GMC Envoy Exhaust Burn The Carpet
Question:
2002 GMC Envoy. There's a sensor on the bottom of the engine that I cannot find out what it is. Can you help with that? Also, the exhaust got so hot that it burn the carpet inside the truck above the muffler. Do you think it is a good idea to straight pipe the catalytic converter and replace the muffler? If so, is there anything else I need to do. This is the 4.2L inline 6 cylider engine.

In regards to the carpet getting burned by the exxhaust. First, there must be a reason why it got that hot to make the floor board so bad that it burned the carpet inside the truck. That is the first thing you need to find out. It is possible that the catalytic converter ust failed and caused it to be so hot, but i ould think something caused it to fail, not just age.
Rich exhaust is the most common thing to cause a cat. converter to overheat. Too much raw fuel is being burned inside to the point it cannot keep up. The most common thing to cause this is that the engine is misfiring. A bad ignition coil on the 4.2L straight six cylinder engine is the usual suspect. You would notice the engine shaking and hesitating. The check engine light would most likely be on or flashing. A flashing light is a condition mandated by the federal government to signify that an engine misfire is so bad to a point that catalytic converter damage may occur.
Another possibility is one or more faulty oxygen sensor. They control how much fuel is injected into the engine depending on the readings they get from the exhaust. There are several and one is actually after the converter and reads how efficient it is performing. This one will set a code P0410 if it detects the catalytic converter is not working properly.
Actual age could also be the problem. The converter like anything just won't last forever. No, i would not uust straight pipe it to fxx this problem. For one the engine light will be on all the time and your GMC Envoy may not run properly becuase of it. Also, if an emission test is required for you the truck will not pass without it. You can find a reasonable price for the correct parts to get your truck back to original without modifying it like that. Alays best to put things back to normal and factory original.
