Equinox instrument panel lights out

Unread post by mirons » Sat Jan 16, 2010 6:06 pm

We have a 2006 equinox ls, and all of a suden we have no lights in the instrument panel, the back lights for the gage needels are there and the odometor are working but there are no lights that light up the dials. I can see one or two going out put not all. I have done the easy stuff like the fuses, and none where blown, any thoughts on what to look at next.
Also any one know where to get a repair guide, Chilton and Hayes dont make one.
After reading some post here and else where I'm realy woundering if this vechical was a good choice. :?

These lights are soldered into the circuit board of the instrumant panel cluster. Reaaly no way to replace bulbs. Unless you or someone is good with taking apart the cluster down to the circuit board, and melting the bulb solder out and soldering in new bulbs. Not even sure if you can get new bulbs anywhere.
Normally we just either send the cluster out for repairs, or replace it with an exchange unit. The exchange unit is almost the same price as getting the original repaired.

What do you mean "out for repair" do they send you back the original unit with the original odometer readings?

Yes. Either you send yours in for repairs, or you replace it with a replacement unit. The replacement would need to be programmed.

have you tried to adjust the interior light dimmer switch?

That connects to the BCM to tell the BCM how bright the dash lights should be. The same wiring to the dash lights goes to the backlighting for the trans indicator, the traction control switch, the backlight for the hazard switch, the backlight for the HVAC control module module. If all those things light up and can be adjusted bright or dim with the dash dimmer switch the you need to look at the gray wire that goes to the dash. Pin A8. If A8 has power when the dash lights are requested then the problem is with the cluster. If the dimmer works with everything else but isn't bringing power to the cluster then look for a break in the gray wire or run a new wire tied into the working dimmer circuit. The gray wire brings the power to the dash light bulbs but they ground to logic module in the cluster

If you're good with electrical you could just put power and ground to one of the dash lights and see if they light up. Because they are all in parallel it one lights up, they will all light up. If some or all don't light up the bulbs may just be burned up.
