2002 Silverado 2500 Reverse quits working after heating up

Unread post by Kimberlyjan » Sat Nov 16, 2013 7:36 pm

I just bought a 2002 Silverado 2500 and after I drive it a few miles the Reverse quits working. I can let the truck sit about 10 minutes and Reverse will work again, until it is driven again for a few miles. Could this be a sensor or ??????

There is no sensor in the transmission that can prevent reverse. Sounds like you have an internal problem. Maybe a valve body problem. First try adding a cleaner then doing a trans fluid and filter change to see it that help. Put several miles on truck after adding the cleaner, before do the flush. Instructions are on the product that can be purchased at any parts store.

Thank you for the info, but its not just the Reverse doing it now as I found out after a few driving attempts. Its the whole Transmission gets hot and starts slipping. After cooling off it works fine again.

transmission only has 1st and second gear

Unread post by Mark » Thu Dec 18, 2014 8:44 pm

My 2001 Chevy 1500 transmission was working great then I blew the bottom line I fixed that drove it home no problems then was going to work and only had 1st an 2nd gear so I headed back home. When I got home I lost it all now it will shift fine when it's cold but I don't have anything when it gets warm. What would cause this?

I would verify your fluid level and the color and smell of your transmission fluid. But it sounds like the trans is worn. Cold, when the fluid is thicker will let it catch for a while but when the fluid warms and thins it will just slip.

you should talk to a trans specialist

you're talking about the mechanical transfer case shifter right? If you haven't used it for a while it may be just stuck. With the truck in neutral and the engine off keep rocking the shifter back and forth trying to break it free. Do not use excessive force in case the transfer case shift fork is damaged.

I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado 5.3 engine I was driving on the freeway and my truck came to stop the engine was still running but wouldn't move in to gear never happen before I don't think it the transmission because it didn't give me any warning sign like slipping and such so what else could it be

check your fluid level and the color and smell. sounds like the trans went out from your description but check the fluid would be the place to start.
