1998 Dodge Caravan

Unread post by debrak14 » Sun Feb 10, 2013 9:22 am

My brake warning light has come on and remains on. My brakes seem to work fine. Could this just be a short? I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan

It could be something as simple as low brake fluid in the master cylinder, the level sensor is bad or even the emergency brake is depressed a little. For the latter, some people can misinturpret which brake light is on.

First things first, check the brake fluid. This is usually the cause. If it is low, you either have a small leak in the system or the brakes are worn down so far that make the level low.

Took a 20 minute ride to the next town in our dodge grand caravan 2003. IT was cold this day ( 20 degrees)and some puddles,, went to park abs light went on,, went in building came out abs light on, took off, not even a minute later,, abs off, went through a couple puddles and then went into another place/store came out,, engine cranked but didnt turn over, with engine light on then had called friend come and help us out,,kicked fuel tank,, it started, engine light still on, but running,, drove it back home to autopart store, they plugged it in, it said it was po351 and po352 and 10 abs. Said it was coil pack,, We bought ignition cleaner for fuel and headed down the road,, engine light went out. Warmer the next day,, engine still turns on. Happy! Thought it was the cleaners but we still changed spark plugs and wires and coil pack. Engine light still off at this point. Next day,,( 17 degrees cold day) had to take a test drive because of big road trip,, Went and took another 20 minute ride and stopped at the same store,, came out,, it started,, went though not deep puddle again slowly and went to another store and went in for about 30 minutes. came out car wouldnt start again. Mechanic tried to kick the tank,, wouldnt work. Let it rest. Still didnt work. Cranks but doesnt turn the engine on. Fuel pump on,, hear the hum.. Had to get a tow. Was out in the cold,, 2 old ladies.. lol Still dont start. What do we do. Spent most of our money! Help please!

Sounds like the puddles are the common thing. A wiring harness getting wet with salt water can cause the ABS code. Also, water may be getting into some other wiring for the no start condition. Possibly getting into the computer.

A common cause for these codes is a bad crank position sensor. If bad, the engine will have no sprark, no fuel injector signal, and give these codes.

To be sure, you are going to need to test what is missing, causing it to not start. Meaning, is there spark, is there fuel injector pulse signal? Depending on that, that leads to to what part of the system needs to be checked. If no for both, probably a bad crank sensor.

If you want to remove the lock cylinder part there is a pin that points downward under the lock cylinder. remove the ground cable (-) from the battery. Put the key in the ignition switch and push up on the pin. if you feel the pin move up pull out the tumbler out. If you don't feel the pin move up turn the ignition switch to another position and see if it moves up there.

for the actual electrical part of the ignition, you have to take the lower cover off the steering column around the key. then Use a number 10 torx to remove the screw that holds the ignition switch to the column. Press the plastic lock tabs and remove the switch.
