4 runner wont stay running

Unread post by Hempsmoke » Sun Nov 30, 2014 3:16 pm

i have a 1991 4 runner with a 3.0 v6 it will start and run for a minute then die. i have replaced everything under the hood as for as sensors and relays. if i hold the key in start position for a minute after it starts it will run fine til i shut it off. any ideas what is wrong and why holding the key in start position is bypassing what ever is making it die?

I would look at your ignition switch. the contacts in the switch may be bad. It would be the easiest thing to verify.

It is not the ingition switch. The truck starts fine. It just wont stay running unless u hold the key ingaged for a minute after it starts.

Every sensor and relay under the hood, fuel pump, all the fuel regulators and injectors. Have spent a fortune trying to fix it.

I mean what have you changed by holding the starter on? It could be possible the the ignition switch has a burned contact and holding the key over longer then releasing it rather that just letting it go when it starts makes the contact touch a portion of the contact that is still okay. Like I said it would be very easy to check. I'm just saying if all you do is hold the key over and it doesn't die, why wouldn't you look at that first?

I did look at it and have changed the switch. It did it with the old one as well.

ok, what have you done to try and see what circuit is turning off your engine? Not replace anything but what circuit or circuits have stopped working and kills the engine?
