2001 ford excursion will not shift into gear

Unread post by ronnyr » Wed Feb 16, 2011 10:11 am

I have a 2001 ford excursion 4wd 7.3 liter auto trans. When I back out of my long driveway, often it will not drive forward once I shift from reverse to forward (as if it were in neutral). At this point, I can shift down into low/#1, turn overdrive off and it will lunge forward a foot or so at a time enough to get me out of the road at which time I disconnect the batteries to reset the "brain" and it will return to normal. It's obviously some sort of sensor or backing safety issue, any help/diagnosis would be very appreciated.

Could be a problem with the valve body in the transmission. But that would not explain why disconnecting the battery makes a difference. Inside the valvebody are all the shift valves and solenoids. If a valve were sticking, this would give you the problem from reverse to drive you are having with your Ford truck. Disconnecting the battery could be resetting a solenoid, but not a valve. A scan of the computer codes that may be stored might be needed as a first step to diagnosing this problem.

I have a 1990 Ford Bronco 302 aod transmission.. has 95000 miles truck runs great except when takeoff goes into gear perfectly but when in first gear you have to give it at least half throttle to go and its very slow and sluggish untill it shifts to second gear then it drives great and when take off down hill its drives normal no problems any ideas why this is happening

I don't know what is happening to your trans. If you can inspect the wiring going down to the trans, make sure the plug in connections are good and clean and the wiring isn't getting rubbed through anywhere then you're probably going to need to take it to a trans specialist and have them check it out.

1992 F-150 xlt hard to shift

I have a 1992 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat 5.0 extended cab and it acts like I'm not pressing the clutch fully when shifting into 1st to 2nd and grinds a little into 3rd, to 4th and 5th are fine. When I'm stopped or rolling with clutch pressed and in gear it feels like it is trying to go making it sluggish and pulling.. Even in reverse. ?

it sounds like your clutch is not fully disengaging. do you know what type of clutch slave cylinder you have? an internal (inside the bell housing) or an external one? Does the way the pedal feel seem normal? I mean it starts to get pressure up near the top and continues all the way to the floor or does it feel spongy or have more free play up at the top?

also if the clutch is starting to come apart pieces may get stuck between the friction places and drag the disc to keep it spinning instead of making it free

4 wheel drive stuck

Unread post by ksmith2800 » Thu Feb 19, 2015 2:10 am

1997 F150 - I was on a hill with about 2" of snow. I applied the brake and turned the 4 wheel drive button. The light did not come on. The truck shifted in high gear. The transmission got slower and slower but the light still did not come on. Then after that I could not get it out of gear. When this happens how do you get it out of gear? Do I step on the brake?

I don't understand your question. your 4wd switch should affect your transfer case and the front hubs. high gear to me is talking about your automatic transmission overdrive gear. So, are you saying that your transmission is stuck in overdrive? That it no longer downshifts to lower gears when you come to a stop and accelerate from a stop? are you talking about 4wd or 4wd low? Need more information.

so it sounds like a transfer case problem. Like the transfer case went into neutral. but need more info about what happened and more detail on what happened to get gears back in 2wd
