2005 Explorer running loud

Unread post by Hvincent » Mon May 06, 2013 9:18 am

Recently my truck's been running unusually loud when driving, most noticable when coasting after taking my foot off the pedal and on the highway. It idles normally and seems like it shifts fine (auto). There is also a slight vibration in the gas pedal I didn't notice before, but could be unrelated. There's only 60K miles on it, the check engine light is pulling an EVAP code, but other than that my mechanic say everything appears to be fine when he checked it out. Just had an oil change, fluids are fine, new air filter. Should I have the spark plugs changed or a tune up, could it be something else? I can't spend too much $$ on this problem but I know something's wrong. What else should I have checked out? Thanks.

Could be something like an exhaust leak, or related exhaust problem. Those are most noticeable when letting off gas usually, such as a bad baffle in a muffler, or a catalytic converter coming apart internally.

Possibly other drivetrain related problems such as a transmission noise, hub bearing, bad tire, etc. Quite a lot of possibilities. I'd recommend having your mechanic drive it with you so you can point out the noise as it happens. He might be able to pinpoint a bit better that way.
