1990 F250 has fuel and spark will crank will not fire

Unread post by jeffw » Sat Feb 09, 2013 9:23 am

I have a 1990 F250 460 engine, has fuel and spark, it cranks fine but will not fire at all. It was running a little rough and suddenly died. I suspect timing chain but before I tear into that is there anything else that it could be and is there an easy way to diagnose timing chain without tearing into it? Thanks

That is all an engine is needs- fuel, spark and air.
If the engine cranking sounds a little strange or there is popping or backfires, then yes it sounds like a timing chain problem.

To check you would need to get the distributor on top dead center (TDC) # 1 cylinder, then look at timing marks on front cover and crank pulley to see if they line up at 0 degrees. If not, the timing has jumped.
