1987 mustang gt won't start without starting fluid. Once it starts, it sounds like it has a radical cam then dies

first thing you should do is check your fuel pressure. after it starts up what happens when you push down on the gas pedal?

if you don't have a fuel pressure gauge, they sell them on the internet for 30-40 dollars. Most auto parts stores sell them too. I don't know how much the parts places sell them for but probably not too much more than the internet.

if you have a scanner available, scan the fuel trims and see what they show if you can keep it running long enough to get a reading.

yea, you shouldn't keep spraying starting fluid to keep it running. Starting fluid is highly combustible and burns hot. It is to start hard starting engines but not to keep them running.

What noise? "why would it make that noise" When you said it sounds like it has a radical cam I thought you were talking about a rough idle. Big cams have a very rough idle and have the idle raised to keep them from stalling at idle. That's a big cam sound. What noise are you hearing?

fuel injected cars have a minimum fuel pressure spec. That minimum spec is what the manufacturer says is needed to meet the demands of their engine for all the phases of it operation. Many cars will start and run at a lower than spec fuel pressure but it will have times where it will fail to meet the demands as you continue to drive around. I am saying this because there may be fuel pressure at the fuel rail port that you can measure fuel pressure at but you cannot tell if it is enough pressure without a gauge to measure it.

give me a little more information. what has happened to the vehicle to get to this problem? Was everything fine and then you went out one day and the engine wouldn't start? Did you have any problems before this happened? After the first time you went out to the car and it wouldn't start, what happened? Did it crank fine? did the engine sound normal as it turned over? How long did you keep cranking it to try to get it to start? And how many times have you tried to start it since then and what did you do to try and get it running?

The basics to get an engine running is compression (mechanical conditions), Spark (spark to the spark plugs at the right time) and fuel (fuel pressure and injector pulse)(EFI fuel pressure spec is 35-45psi for multi-port fuel injection)

because you can get the engine running on starting fluid, that shows that there is a fuel problem. Spark must be present or it wouldn't start up. So, fuel pressure or injector pulse should be checked.

Now, the noise you talk about is troubling to me. I don't know what kind of noise you are talking about. A clicking noise like a relay clicking? Engine knocking? Engine scraping? A big cam will make the idle rough and the engine shake but that sound isn't like noise from a mechanical or electrical component. So, that's got me curious.

if you could make a video on youtube or facebook (and post a link) of what happens when you try to start the car that would be a big help. Then I could see what is happening and maybe hear the noise you are talking about.

yea, that's strange. It had to have spark if it started with starting fluid. something was igniting the fuel in the cylinders. If it doesn't have spark now you may have more than just one problem.

if there is no spark unplug the connector to the coil. there should be tow wires that go to it. One wire is red and light green. That is the wire that comes from the ignition switch. When you turn the key to run or to start that wire should have battery voltage for the coil. The other wire should be a dark green and yellow wire. That's the wire that grounds the coil to complete the circuit and fire the coil. With the connector not plugged into the coil, check that wire for ground as you crank the engine. A logic probe works good for testing that circuit. Logic probe is a test light that connects to power and ground from the battery and has led lights that light up Red for when it sees battery voltage and lights green when it sees ground. So, when cranking it would see power from the battery all the time on one side of the connector and flashing green on the other side of the connector while cranking the engine over.

If you have power to the one side and pulsing ground on the other side but get no spark from the coil then the coil is probably the problem If you don't have power then look at the wiring from the ignition switch. If you have power but no ground pulses then look at the ignition control module.

Let me know what you find out

yes you are correct, sometimes this happens to my Ford also and every time I have to get it to the maintenance shop to get it in good condition again, then I try to find out why this happes, but didn't get any answer, do you feel any smell kinda like that from your spark plug?
