how you know when you have a camshaft timing solenoid bad?

Usually it will set a trouble code and the check engine light will be on. Sometimes debris can enter the screens on the solenoid and cause it to mess up, but that will also usually set a code. Other than that, there's no real way to tell if it's bad or not.
