a very common problem is the MAF. After market sensors may be problematic also. You need a scanner to look at your fuel trims and see if the engine is running too lean. Watch the Idle Air Control to see if it is working. try turning the AC on, that should bump the idle up a little higher.

Unplug the MAF to see if the condition still exists. You may have to restart the engine a couple of times to get it to run once you unplug the MAF. Does the car run okay when it is cold but as the engine heats up the dying at stops starts up?

Checks for vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks will affect the engine more at idle than when you are driving. Unmetered air will skew the fuel ratio.

Is the service engine soon light on (check engine light)? Does it drive normally or is there any lack of power or anything different when your driving? Or is everything fine except the idle at stops? Can you keep the engine running if you just push the gas pedal a little more to make it idle higher without putting in neutral?

Does it restart quickly after it dies? Does it start and let you put it in drive and go again? Or does it start and want to die again if you put it in drive? Automatic trans could have a locked up converter if it stalls right away when put into drive. Manual trans this is not applicable...
