Brake and Traction Warning Light on Dash

Unread post by Victoria » Tue Feb 23, 2010 4:33 pm

2006 impala
Dash lights = Brake Light
Repair work done prior = Alignment and new trailing arm in rear.
Brakes done month or 2 ago.
question = When I start my car, my brake light comes on and dings at me 10 times. Where the odometer is it flashes - service brake system - service brake assist - service traction control. I recently just had my brakes done and has been driving the same. I have no problems with braking.

First, check that the brake fluid level is full in the master cylinder reservoir.
Next, check the emergency brake that it is up all the way. Pull the handle and lift up on it to make sure it is not engaged at all.
If these check out, then sound like a problem in the ABS system.
This will turn on brake warning lights and the Traction Control lights.
The ABS compouter would need to be scanned for codes.
Common problems with ABS are either one of the wheel speed sensors- which is part of the wheel hub bearing, or a wiring problem to either of the sensors.

2000 chevy impala no brake lights

Unread post by cavmo707 » Fri Feb 21, 2014 4:01 pm

Headlights come on when you start the car, but have no tail lights or brake lights. All fuses have been checked and multi-function switch replaced. It does need a new instrument cluster. Could that effect my tail lights and brake lights. Or is there another common problem with this model?

check the fuse panel. verify that you have good fuses in right side instrument panel. turn signal 15A, hazard 15A and brake light 15A. then for taillights check front park and rear park fuses both 15A. check the park lamp relay and the fuse for the relay in the underhood fuse and relay panel fuse #1 60A.

have you tried a manual reset? turn the key on and crank the engine. when it cranks and doesn't start leave the key in the accessory position for 10 minutes and try to start it again. In some cases it may take multiple tries.

make, model, year and engine size and I could get you more direct information

you should have the vehicle scanned for codes. Could be as simple as a wheel speed sensor not getting the right signal to the computer. Front wheel speed sensors and broken wiring to the front sensors are common as these cars age. Getting a scan for codes and then looking at the data stream will give you a direction to figure out what's happening. Both traction control (stability) and ABS use the wheel speeds to determine if a wheel is starting to skid or the system will apply brake to help cornering.

there may be other reasons that would also turn on these lights. that's why you need to find out what the codes are. Have you cleared the codes and they came back or the lights have come on and you haven't done anything yet?

If you find out what the codes are let me know.
