Car Keeps Dying at stop lights

My 2000 Malibu keeps dying at stop lights. After a few minutes sitting it will usually restart. What is the problem?

Is the check engine light on? Does it run rough before it dies out? Have there been any recent repairs? Does the theft light come on? I need a bit more information to help you.

Check engine light on but has been on for over a year. If I keep my foot on the brake and the accelerator at the same time that seems to keep it from dying.

Ok, that doesn't really help me a whole lot....you need to get the car scanned and let me know any trouble codes stored. More than likely, that will help diagnose your vehicle's problem. Just FYI, if you're having to keep your foot in the gas to keep it from dying, it must be idling down too low at a stop. This can be anything from a clogged air filter or throttle body, a bad fuel pump, a misfire condition, etc....now you can see the importance of knowing any trouble codes stored in the computer. It will at least point you in the right direction.
