2005 Impala
3.8 engine
questions: Is the main bolt right handed thread or left handed thread?
what is the torque spec for such a bolt?
Is the balancer pressed on or slip on?
Do you need a puller to take it off?
Thanks!!

2005 Impala crank shaft harmonic balancer removal
Re: crank shaft harmonic balancer removal
The balancer bolt is a normal right hand thread bolt. The torque spec for re-tightening the bolt is 111 ft. lbs.
Yes, you do need a puller to remove the harmonic balancer, although nothing special. A regular three hole puller will work such as the type used to pull a steering wheel off. The holes in the balancer are fine thread, so be aware of that when picking bolts to use for the puller.

Re: crank shaft harmonic balancer removal
Thanks for the info. We have a 05 3.8 Chevy Impala LS. We have replaced all of the sensors except the EGR valve and the O2 sensors. The car keeps stalling when going up a hill if you are at 1 1/2 RPM it won't want to go past that RPM until you take your foot off the gas petal and then accelerate again it is like it resets itself. Also, when you are creeping in rush hour traffic and you touch the gas to inch up a little not to go over 1 RPM it dies. You can put in nuetural and then start it right back up no problems. Do you have any idea what this two problems can be? The car runs great besides that. Purrs like a kitten. Any suggestions?
Re: crank shaft harmonic balancer removal
You're welcome for the bolt info.
Can you describe the RPM's a little better? You are saying 1 RPM and 1 1/2 RPM which is not possible, but I'll assume you mean halfway between the 1 and the 2 which would be 1500 RPM.
As for your problem, I'd have to ask first if the check engine light comes on, or is on currently? You probably have some trouble codes set due to your issues.

Yes the check engine light is currently. It has been on for a while since we have been having problems. As far as the RPM it is 1500 RPM when going up hills. And as far as in rush hour traffic it doesn't even reach 1 RPM and then it will die. Could these problems be from O2 sensors or and EGR Valve?
Re: crank shaft harmonic balancer removal
I really doubt the oxygen sensors or EGR valve are to blame for the problem you're having. I would, however, highly recommend getting those codes pulled from the computer that are setting the check engine light on. That will surely help you find the real problem here.
