Coolant Leak on 2005 Chevy Impala

Unread post by Sanity » Sat Dec 12, 2009 7:25 pm

Our car leaks fluid. (2005 Chevy Impala) There is a puddle of antifreeze underneath, but when we go to add water or coolant, the radiator seems full and overflows if we add more. We can't seem to find where it is leaking from. Also the heater stops working and when we add a little antifreeze (as much as we can fit) it starts working again but only if we add the stuff we buy from Napa. If we buy it from a c-store or Walmart it doesnt make the heater work. Do you have an idea of what the problem is?

Does not make sense why a different brand of coolant whould effect the system.
There is still air in the system.
If you see a leak on the ground, there is a leak that nees to be found.
A pressure test may need to be done.
There are common areas of leaks, depending on what size engine you have.

If you have the 3400 V6 engine the most common places to leak any freeze are the upper intake manifold gaskets, water pump or one of the head gaskets. The back cylinder head gasket is the most common area. If you have the 3800 V6 engine the upper intake Plenum is common for leaking anti-freeze into the intake. It will burn the anti-freeze and will never leak on the ground. The heater not working is a sign of air in the system. There can be air in the system because of the leak or head gasket problem. A head gasket problem will pump combustion gases into the cooling system causing air pockets. Air in the heater core cannot transfer heat into the passenger compartment. The heater core must be full of coolant which means the entire engine cooling system must be full of coolant and free from air. Have the system pressure tested and find out where that leak is coming from.
