Power locks for 2006 Cobalt not working

Unread post by Dave » Tue Feb 15, 2011 6:36 pm

My power locks for my 2006 Chevy Cobalt do not work. They occasionally go up or down after I put the car in gear, but the buttons do not work any more. I bought the car used, and they never have worked properly while I have owned the car.

Is there a way I can fix this myself without having to pay $150-$250 for a repair job?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Most likely the problem on your Cobalt is one or both of the power lock switches. Then tend to get corrosion inside and quit working. Sometimes they even work by themselves. Try touching them very softly to see if you can get it to work. Or pop a switch out and unplug it looking for green corrosion in the electrical connector. If not switches, could be a wiring problem under the carpet or a Body Control Module(BCM) problem.

I unscrewed and pulled out the lock-switch console on both front doors. Corrosion was definitely the problem. I disassembled the switches, cleaned them up with a wire brush and a toothbrush with WD40. I now have a car with working locks, and I paid nothing whatsoever to anyone.

You guys are awesome. Thanks a ton!!
