1996 Chevy Cavalier Leaking Gas

Unread post by Jim » Sun Dec 06, 2009 10:46 pm

My son has a 90 something Cavalier. He called me to ask why the air cleaner was full of gas, and was leaking on the ground. Do you guys know what would be causing this. He also said the car was running. I told him to shut it off and don't try to start it with all that gas, and fumes around. Thanks Jim

Could be a leaking fuel pressure regulator. They leak gas into the vacuum line and fill it and the engine up with fuel.
Then it could get into the air filter.

Be sure to check the fuel lines going to the throttle body.
Possibly the injector is stuck open too.

If the aircleaner is full gas in the engine running at bad, sounds like the problem I had a few years ago. It was the injector stuck wide-open dumping all kinds of gas and choking the engine. Since it was running so bad the engine was backfiring and spitting gas into the aircleaner and all over the place on the ground. I was afraid the car was going to catch on fire. I had it towed to the mechanic and he fixed it in about two hours. The repair cost about $250.
