It should normally be between about 1 volt and 4.5 volts, so that reading should be fine depending on the position of the sensor.

Pontiac Grand Am Shaking, lights dim and stalled out

Unread post by mrSteve » Sun Jan 13, 2013 1:47 pm

Ok so my 1999 Grand Am just died As i was driving home it started to purr really loud and shake, then i noticed that the brakes weren't working as well as they were and i couldn't push them down as far. Next i noticed that when I didn't push the gas the head lights would dim and then go bright again. I didn't smell anything and no lights went on until right before it died. Right before it did die it became very hard to move the steering wheel as if the power steering failed and then as it was dying the dash light all came on.

So does the car restart now, or will it not start up at all?

If it doesn't start at all, I'd say you probably had a fuel pump that went out. If it does start, but runs really bad, you would have a misfire condition that would have to be diagnosed to find which cylinder or cylinders are misfiring. That could be things like a bad fuel injector, or ignition problem like a bad coil, plug, or wire. Also, it probably set a trouble code as it died out, so I'd suggest getting it scanned as well.

your factory radio was tied into the dash lights. the dash lights, running lights are all tied together on the first click on your headlight switch. they have their own fuse separate from the headlights. check the fuses. Park lamp fuse 15A in the underhood fuse box left side of the engine compartment. Make sure the wires to your radio are not compromised.

is it the service engine soon? (SES) or a maintenance light?

If the fuse for the parking lights is good, does it have power? power out of the fuse box will be the brown wire for the parking and tail lights. there is a relay in the fuse panel that the fuse is in. it's the automatic light control relay. it gets turned on by the body control module. (white wire grounds the relay to turn it on)

should be on top of the transmission. The shift cable attached to the arm on the switch.

Why are you going to change it? Is the switch bad? Is it out of adjustment? Is the shift lock not letting you get it out of park? Is it a tranny problem?
