2004 Grand Am GT1 - Cooling Fans Won't Turn On When Idle
I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am GT1. For a while now, my car has been slightly over 200 degrees at times while idling. Apparently my cooling fans are not kicking on. This past weekend, my car started to jerk while slowing down or at idle. My husband changed the spark plugs once again *and wires* - only to find that Cylinder 1 wasn't firing (or maybe misfiring) - the spark plug was all black. We replaced it, he pulled the same plug, only this time to find water on it - which today he's replacing the head gaskets. My question - what failing parts would cause my fans to not kick on when they've reached a certain temperature to keep my car from overheating? We have also replaced the thermometer (yesterday) and we'll be ordering a Coolant Temp Sensor - hopefully these two items will help correct this problem. I don't need it overheating again, cooking the gaskets and then we're back at square 1. Thanks for all your help.
Re: 2004 Grand Am GT1 - Cooling Fans Won't Turn On When Idle
your low speed fan should come on around 212F or the ac is turned on. Your high speed fan should come on around 221F, or if you turn the AC on and pressure is over 240psi
the warning for overheating (hot coolant indicator) comes on at 262F.
the warning for overheating (hot coolant indicator) comes on at 262F.

I wasn't asking at what temperatures they should come on, and the fan should come on wayyyy before the temperature hits 212!!

No, the cooling fans DO NOT come on before 212 degrees F. Your car is not overheating.adidas1023 wrote:I wasn't asking at what temperatures they should come on, and the fan should come on wayyyy before the temperature hits 212!!

your thermostat shouldn't even open until the coolant reaches 195F. with the cooling system being a closed system (with a 12 to 15 psi radiator cap) the cooling system can run higher temperatures without boiling at 212F
