Pontiac Grand am engine swap

Unread post by cjenkins » Tue Sep 17, 2013 10:35 am

Will a 1996 grand prix engine (3.1l v6 DOHC) fit into a 96' grand am (2.4l I4 DOHC)? Possibly even a later model gtp engine(3.4l and 3.8l)?

First of all, there is no such thing as a 3.1L DOHC. The 3.1L is not an overhead cam engine. Either you are talking about a 3100 engine or a 3.4L DOHC X motor.

The DOHC will not fit in your Grand Am.

The 3.1L will fit, but since you are replacing the 4 cylinder, there is a lot of work to get it to work. The entire engine harness is different, all mounting, A/C, P/S, Alternator, etc are all different. Not to mention the PCM and it's programming.

As with any engine swap to a different motor, anything is possible with enough time, fabricating and money.

Hey, I got an idea, put the correct motor in it if you are trying to get your car running because the 2.4L blew up.
