Pontiac Grand Am over heating fuel pump relay

Unread post by sbishop284 » Fri Apr 30, 2010 1:05 pm

I have a Pontiac Grand Am and the fuel pump relay keeps overheating. I can put a new relay in and drive for a while . then it over heats again . I can put the one i just took out and it will start up and drive. Could the fuel filter be clod up and making the fuel pump to over work

This would not be a fuel filter problem. This is either a fuel pump drawing too much current, or a ground problem in the fuel pump circuit.

Yes this is most likely a bad fuel pump. Since the fuel pump is electric, if it is binding up internally that will cause it to draw too much electricity. Too much current through the fuel pump relay will cause it to get hot and probably melt internally and cause it to stop working. Let us know what you found on this. Because if it is not the fuel pump then you have to have a pinched wire somewhere that feeds voltage to it.
