Catalytic converter clogged and smells
Catalytic converter clogged and smells
I have a 2004 Buick Regal that stalled 2 days ago. I smelled sulfur and my mechanic friend said that my Cat Converter was clogged. I bought a universal one and took it to a shop and they welded it on for me. I left the shop and didn't make it 3 miles and it stalled again. I called the shop and they said they replaced the converter but didn't do anything else. What else could make my car do this??It starts and instantly stalls.
Re: Catalytic converter clogged and smells
the sulfur smell, rotten egg smell, is from the cat working hard. May or may not be the problem. It is something to check. The smell is from the cat overworking. Did anyone check to see if your engine was running rich or lean? Did they do a back pressure test on the exhaust system? (before and after the cat)
Is anyone sure that the cat or plugged exhaust is the reason for the stall?
Check your fuel pressure. make sure the security light is not coming on. I would hook it up to a scanner and see what codes might be stored in all the modules.

Re: Catalytic converter clogged and smells
Thank you. It was my Mass Air Flow Sensor. Easy fix. :)
Re: Catalytic converter clogged and smells
congrats, glad you got it fixed. also make sense that if the MAF doesn't read the correct air flow your engine could run rich and cause the smell from the exhaust.
