Power steering and alternator

I've got a 2001. Power steering pump started howling. I checked the fluid and it is full. It seemed to have a lot of air in the fluid though. Also looking around the engine I see what appears to be power steering fluid like a high pressure spray but I can't see where it's coming from. At the same time the pump started howling, the battery light came on. Checking voltage on the battery. It doesn't seem to be getting enough voltage. Alternator is easy enough but the power steering has me puzzled. Any ideas

2003 Pontiac Grand AM V6 3.4 Overheating

My Son's Grand Am suddenly overheated to the point the engine shut off. After allowing it to cool down I inspected it and found that the previous owner had improperly installed a new thermostat. The thermostat had slipped out of position when it was being installed which caused the housing to not seat properly and the housing pinched the thermostat seal and the lower housing bolt wasn't tightened enough so when the gasket gave way all the antifreeze was pumped out. I replaced the thermostat and replaced the antifreeze and took it for a drive. It overheated again and dumped most the coolant out again. After trouble shooting some more I discovered that the fans were not working, it has new fans, so I checked the relay and fuses, everything was good except I did notice that someone had removed the air condition clutch relay so I replaced it. I refilled it again. I started it and allowed the engine to reach the normal operating temperature. The fans starting operating and it seemed to be staying at the normal temperature . I took it for another drive in town so that I could go at least 50mph and up hills, about 8 miles, everything seemed ok. I stopped at a store and shut it off. When I came back it had dump the coolant out of the coolant tank through the overflow. By the time I got it back home the temperature had gone to the max again. I thought the water pump was making a noise so I replaced it also. I checked the old pump out and it seemed to be ok. I checked the oil to see if it had any coolant in it and it didn't. Does anyone have an idea why it runs ok and then after shutting it off it overheats and dumps coolant out the overflow?

94 grand am headlight problem help

My Pontiac grand am 94 low beams don't work after giving a friend a jump. Brights work not low beams. It took 5 minutes to be connected to him and my headlights were on. The fuse box in the inside drverside has a headlight fuse circut breaker. It's says on the fuse 20a 14v under that it says 12077859 its not like the fuses in the box its a circuit breaker thing. Should I change that cuz getting to the bulb isn't easy and they both went out at the same time right after I jumped him. Help please please driving with brights on is to much on all the other drivers and I need help. Thanks guys or girls.

Problems with 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4L V6

Hi, I just replaced the engine in my Grand Am a few days ago, and am currently running into some issues. The first day I got it running, everything was fine. I didn't run into a single problem. But the second day, it started acting funny. At first, the only issue was that every so often while accelerating even slightly, the engine would sputter just a little, as if it was running out of gas, and then it would be fine for a while.

Then today, I went to drive it again, and it was absolutely fine for a while, no sputtering whatsoever. It eventually started sputtering again, and started happening more and more often. It started sputtering even when I was idling or decelerating. The sputtering wasn't very intense at all though, it was really light and was only for a second.

Then as I'm turning into the grocery store, my engine just starts making this really low and loud rumbling, and it accelerates extremely slow. It sounds like my entire exhaust just fell off at the engine. When I parked and opened my hood, I was blasted with exhaust fumes. I checked at my muffler, and there's barely anything coming out of it. Also, besides the loud rumbling, there's something else that just sounds off about the engine, but I'm not sure how to describe it. I would venture to say it sounds like what I would assume is one or more of the pistons not firing.

Additional information:

The car itself is a '99. The new engine in it is the same as the previous (3.4L), but the new one is an '03.

My car had been sitting in my garage on jack stands without the engine in it for the last 7 months.

Also, after the rumbling started, my car overheard fairly quickly.

After some research, my best guess is that the fuel injectors are clogged, but I want better opinions on the problem before I go tearing this engine apart.

2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT loses power and RPMs jump

What would cause an'01 grand Am GT to lose power when accelerating? The RPMs also flutter-almost like the transmission is slipping. When you let off the gas then it will straighten up a little, shift gears, and you can accelerate. The RPMs have been fluttering for a while, but used to only do it in Overdrive, so I nought there may be an issue with the transmission...now,I'm not really sure what to think. The transmission repair shop hooked it up to a diagnostic computer and found no problems and doesn't seem to think this is what it is.

2004 Grand Am wont start HELP!

My car wont start, it's the second time I've had this issue. The first time I unhooked the battery and checked the plugs. When I put it all back together it fired right up. Haven't had a problem til now. Theres no security system that im aware of. Although the light does come on a brief moment before starting, please help. Thanks

2002 Grand Am Ecotec Idle Issues

Hey Folks! Daughter’s 2002 Grand Am SE with 2.2 ECOTEC, 97K miles. Rough idle issue. Last mechanic said no codes???

After a computer reset (disconnect battery for 15 minutes, ignition switch to run for a minute, off, then start.) idle issues go away for a while (weeks). Then gradually start getting rougher and rougher to the point that if stopped at a light in drive with the A/C on it will buck and die. Without any load (A/C or turning at idle) it will buck but usually keeps running. It will crank right back up and always runs strong and smooth above idle with no hesitation.

Have replaced plugs (AC Delco), boots, Idle Air Control Valve, cleaned intake and butterfly, and fuel filter. Just wondering where to look next?

96 Pontiac Grand Am SE Climate Control Bulbs

I have been searching for about an hour now with no luck on finding an answer and was hoping someone could help me out.

Recently my climate control lights went out. Right side went first and now the left side has as well. Took it out and found there are 2 bulbs. But no clue how to get them out of the housing they are in so I can change them out or even if they do come out.

They aren't soldered to a circuit board or anything like that. I am posting a picture of what I am talking about to hopefully make more sense of what I am trying to say.

I can't pull the wires out of the back and the bulb itself will not budge. Hoping someone has had this problem in the past and can help me out!!!

Grand Am just clicks starting problem

My 2004 grand am v6 3.4 just clicks when trying to start. We were sitting with the radio on and the engine shut off when the dash lights went dim and the radio lost the display and sound. Battery is good checks 100%. Tried to jump start it just clicks. After 3 or four tries the lights came on bright and it started normally. This happened a few years ago and the dealer said they had to reset the computer. Can I do this myself?, and how. It has started normally 3 times since. I just can't depend on it not to leave us stranded.

2004 Grand Am GT1 - Cooling Fans Won't Turn On When Idle

I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am GT1. For a while now, my car has been slightly over 200 degrees at times while idling. Apparently my cooling fans are not kicking on. This past weekend, my car started to jerk while slowing down or at idle. My husband changed the spark plugs once again *and wires* - only to find that Cylinder 1 wasn't firing (or maybe misfiring) - the spark plug was all black. We replaced it, he pulled the same plug, only this time to find water on it - which today he's replacing the head gaskets. My question - what failing parts would cause my fans to not kick on when they've reached a certain temperature to keep my car from overheating? We have also replaced the thermometer (yesterday) and we'll be ordering a Coolant Temp Sensor - hopefully these two items will help correct this problem. I don't need it overheating again, cooking the gaskets and then we're back at square 1. Thanks for all your help.

Re: Pontiac Grand am engine swap

First of all, there is no such thing as a 3.1L DOHC. The 3.1L is not an overhead cam engine. Either you are talking about a 3100 engine or a 3.4L DOHC X motor.

The DOHC will not fit in your Grand Am.

The 3.1L will fit, but since you are replacing the 4 cylinder, there is a lot of work to get it to work. The entire engine harness is different, all mounting, A/C, P/S, Alternator, etc are all different. Not to mention the PCM and it's programming.

As with any engine swap to a different motor, anything is possible with enough time, fabricating and money.

Hey, I got an idea, put the correct motor in it if you are trying to get your car running because the 2.4L blew up.

Re: 96 Pontiac grand am transmission removal

no. the trans can be removed without taking out the engine. books for 7.2 hours. Need a engine support to hold the engine up from the top and the trans comes out from the bottom.

Re: Pontiac grand am dtc p1606

if the security light is coming on the car may not start because of the anti-theft module. you may have to see if you can relearn your key. Scan for codes in the passlock with a tech2 scanner

p1606 is for a serial communication loss for device #6

that means that a device that the pcm is looking for is not responding. the pcm did not get a 25 valid responses from a device and the system voltage was over 6.8 volts. Need to find out what is not communicating.

Re: 1999 grand am, antifreeze in rocker, not engine

The most common cause is the intake manifold gaskets leaking.

We have also had many problems with the 3.4L rear headgasket leaking. This will usually cause overheating and air pockets in the coolant, but not normally contamination in the oil or valve cover, but it can.

See these pictures of 3400 cylinder head removal. Be sure to read the whole article, and pictures on page 2.

There are a lot more than 7 bolts on the top of the engine to remove the intake manifold. The bolts you are talking about sound like the upper intake plenum. And this is not just removing of 7 bolt either. It is quite a big job for anyone who is not a mechanic by trade.

Grand Am Electric Issues- Speedometer, ABS, Traction

2004 Grand Am GT - All just happened today- When I hit the brakes my odometer goes out, let off the brakes it comes back on. Speedometer also quit registering correctly (said I was doing 55 when I was probably going around 20). My ABS, Service engine soon and traction control lights are on (they have been on for months, but wondering if it was an ABS issue left unattended which could be causing my issue now?)- this usually happens when my wheel bearings go bad- although they arent yet so I was confused when my lights came on.

96 pontiac grand am se odometer

What controls the odometer? I changed the speed sensor. It isn't giving out no codes. What can it be?It's all electric. The speedometer works fine.
