TOWN CAR NON VENTING GAS TANK

Unread post by cloudyman10021 » Thu Aug 08, 2013 1:46 am

I have a 2002 Lincoln Town Car ... It seems that the gas tank is not venting and eventually collapses inward and the car stalls out ... and the gas station attendants can not add more than about 6 or 7 gallons before it kicks off ...3 mechanics thus far, including a Lincoln dealer, have not been able to fix ... they tell me they get no 'codes' ... one told me to drive without the gas cap so it will be able to vent ...

anyone ever had this type of problem? .... I am in the Ramsey, NJ area if anyone knows a mechanic good with Lincolns ...[/color]

check to see if your canister vent valve is plugged or stuck closed. Key off or out of the ignition, the vent valve should be open. Use a smoke machine with the fuel filler adapter and put smoke into the tank. You should see smoke coming out of the vent valve port. There should be no build up of pressure on the flow meter on the smoke machine. You should also be able check with a scanner hoked up to your car and look at the FTP (fuel tank pressure) sensor. with the key on but the engine off, you should be able to do a test on the vent valve. Turning it on and off. With the smoke machine hooked up to the fuel tank filler tube you should be able to see smoke when you open the valve and see the smoke stop when you close it. If everything looks good there then check to see if your purge valve is working. Unhook the vacuum hose from the intake vacuum port. Verify that you can turn the purge solenoid on and off with the smoke machine blowing smoke through the valve. Make sure you can turn off the flow of smoke.

Vent valve can get debris into the vent and the valve so that when the purge opens it sucks all the air out of the tank and collapses it. You should have evap codes though normally.

Thank you ... while I am not mechanically inclined myself, i showed this to the Lincoln mechanic at the dealership and he is doing such now, especially the smoke test ...

I will let you know how it turns out ... I should get the car back on Monday ...

here's the thing, if the tank has collapsed it often times damages the fuel pump assembly. Hopefully, yours is ok
