1999 Jeep Cherokee Gas Gauge Always Read Full

Unread post by Vance » Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:39 pm

Im having a problem with my gas gauge in my jeep. It always reads full. I pulled the gas tank and the sending unit off and the float is not stuck. I disconnected both of the wires going to the sending unit and the gauge still reads full. I dont know what to do from here.

If disconnecting the fuel level sensor results in no change then you have one of two problems.

First, and most likely, the fuel gauge itself is probably faulty. This is a common occurrence and would require that the entire instrument cluster be replaced. Depending on your vehicles options, the new cluster might have to be programmed to function properly in your Jeep. This would need to be repaired at a Jeep dealership.

Second, and less likely than the gauge, would be a wiring problem somewhere between the sender and gauge. You might try to run a continuity check from the cluster to the sender to check for any shorts or other problems.
