1999 Ford Explorer Brake pedal down
1999 Ford Explorer Brake pedal down
1999 explorer, 5.0 Limited AWD model. brake pedal creeps down aprox 1/2" to 1" just before it comes to a complete stop, then holds. Does not happen every time. More often when wheels are turned slightly. Master cyl is full, no leaks found. What is needed to correct this condition?
Re: 1999 Ford Explorer Brake pedal down
sounds like the master cylinder is going bad. to check to see if the master is bleeding down there's more to check out. When you say the the pedal creeps down,is it the booster that lets you press harder on the pedal or does the pedal creep down and the vehicle will start to roll? When the pedal has dropped down, where does the vehicle start to roll if you slowly let the pedal up? If the vehicle starts to roll as soon as you start to let the pedal up, then the master is the likely culprit. If you have to let the pedal up to where it feels the normal height before the vehicle starts to roll then it may just be the feel of the booster.

Re: 1999 Ford Explorer Brake pedal down
I have experienced a bypassing master cyl. This is different. The pedal creeps down at 1MPH or less. Usually when coming to a stop while beginning to make a turn. Once the pedal has creeped down it stops and holds. It does not go down any farther, and the car does not rollajhank wrote:1999 explorer, 5.0 Limited AWD model. brake pedal creeps down aprox 1/2" to 1" just before it comes to a complete stop, then holds. Re: 1999 Ford Explorer Brake pedal down
there are different ways a master can go out. Totally go down to the floor is one. That's when both chambers bypass. If only one chamber is bad it will go down but the other chamber will still pressure up and hold the pedal from going all the way down and hold it's own section of the braking active.
It is also a possibility that if you have ABS that there may be a problem there. Scan for ABS codes.
