Unread post by onalisa1717 » Sat Jan 26, 2013 1:11 pm

Hi, my husband went to change tire's on my plow truck and didn't tell me that he did not change all for b-4 he left for work in alaska, now it is snowing and there are 17s on the back and 16.50s on the front of a 1988 F-250 4wheel drive with a boss plow on it. I only use it for plowing can I use it like this and if so can I use the 4-wheel with the tire's this way. my driveway is about 800- 1000 ft. :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: , My husband is a buuuutttt.   thanx, Lisa

The tire difference isn't really that substantial, but you always risk doing damage to the drivetrain when you have different size tires on a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

The gear ratios in the front and rear differential are the same and want to turn at the same speed when you have the truck in 4WD. What happens when you have different size tires is that one axle will be turning slower at the same speed. This causes jerking, skipping and all around problems for which ever axle is affected. This can lead to ring and pinion damage, side gear damage, axles breaking, etc.

I wouldn't recommend driving the truck in 4WD mode until you get the correct tires on it.
