2005 Mercury Monterey error code P0340

Unread post by Rollo1 » Mon Sep 07, 2015 1:34 pm

2005 Mercury Monterey • 4.2L V6 FWD Automatic • 75,600 Miles
I have a Mercury Monterey 2005 just lately it started to have a problem at first it would sputter then run fine and only about once a month. Then it started getting worse with it stalling and then it would die after a loud belt squealing sound. It finely had the check engine light come on so I read the code P0340. I had read that this model had a problem with the ECU having water intrusion problems so I ordered a new ECU and installed it myself. But the problem came right back with the Squealing belt sound and the engine just shutting off after resetting the key to off and restarting it works for a few minutes then dies again with the RPM's around 2000.
It has been real bad the last couple of days since we have had heavy rains so that led me to believe it was the ECU. But after replacement still the same. I replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor also and still the same. I have read that it could also be the Alternator and that kind of makes sense since the belt squeals every time it happens. The engine runs perfectly until this happens then it just shuts off sometimes I can pump the throttle and it will return to normal but not every time PLEASE HELP!

the belt squeal noise is what I would be looking at. having the belt squeal and then the engine die would kind of over-ride any other problem you might think you have. I would look to see if you have the AC on or the heater on defrost. Heater on defrost or AC will turn on the AC compressor. If the compressor is freezing up it will put a big load on the AC belt. If the compressor stops turning it could stop your motor at idle.

check the belt squeal problem before you spend more money on parts. Something is putting a load on your drive belt. What is it? It might take two people to see what is happening with the belt. One person to start the engine and you to watch the belt and see what is happening. When you said it would sputter, that could be when the AC could be starting to freeze up but still turning. Then when it squeals and stalls the engine it could be actually stopping. put the heater on heat or off, or unplug the compressor coil to see if stops the problem.

I found out today that it is not a belt squeal. It sounds like the Camshaft Synchronizer is making the noise that is a squeal similar to a belt squeal. So now it looks like I need to take it to a shop to have it repaired since my hands are much to large to do what needs to be done for this repair. Too bad I spent all that money on a PCM that was not needed.

the ford camshaft synchronizer goes right where the distributor used to be. But now they have the wire harness right over the top of it with a plastic cover. And like a distributor you have to time it to match your engines position. They chirp when they are just starting to make noise. then the noise happens more often and gets louder and louder. It will sound just like a belt squeal but it's coming from the back of the motor instead of where the belts are located. when it gets really bad it will make the noise all the time and it will get very loud. Because it is difficult to get at and it has to be put in at the correct position in relation to the engine, having a shop do it is a good choice. Glad you found out what it was
