OOPS. Sorry. I meant the cleaning under the coil, not module.
No, i would not condemn the module.

I wonder if it could just be an idle problem. Again, a vacuum leak only effects idle. But also a throttle full of carbon. Both of these would not prevent it from starting right away.

The key is to have it act up for the shop it is at. Then, when it is not starting, they can check if the engine is loosing spark or fuel or whatever is making it not start. It HAS TO ACT UP for them.

My mechanic friend has turned the throttle screw several times to keep it from shutting off. He seen the car act up such as rev up and then die down, rev up and die down - two or three times I KNOW of him turning the throttle up to make the motor run faster. This probably runs gas out faster (seems like anyway) I don't know. Maybe that's the problem!..Never did hear back from garage, maybe tomorrow he'll call and give me some good news, hopefully. Maybe it does need a good cleaning or maybe it's just had the lick. Beats the hell out of me! IS this a good thing to keep turning the throttle up like that?...This person isn't the one working on my car, he's just a friend who happens to be a mechanic and usually does the small work at a low price. He's the one who keeps turning the throttle screw up. I'll see if he'll clean the motor for me and see what kind of mess I come out with next. These last 2 months have left me broke and aggravated as hell considering I can't fix this car....seriously, 2 months trying to fix this car...started around the first of Jan. I'm beginning to lose hope. It's been one thing after another after another after another...like just days after getting one thing fixed something else needs fixed. After that - it'll run for about A WEEK and then something will need fixed and back in the garage it'll go....LOL...it is a much older car - I have to realize that, I forget! Thanks!

Hey! The mechanic couldn't find anything wrong with my car so what's next?....I don't know why it quits after traveling quite a ways (roughly 14 miles) then the car will quit and won't start for about two hours later. Anyway, the mechanic said that he has driven it and stopped several times and nothing. Never quit once on him. He's let it run for several hours (he said) and it never quit not once. BUT after bringing it home, I did take a look up under the hood myself and made sure that all the hoses were connected to the module (Check). All the hoses are ok, shiny and silver on the inside of the cap, but one hose had quite a bit of rust in the cap of it. I took a screw driver to clean some of the rust away, but really can't tell it did any good. You can see a little spot of shiny silver. Other than that, it's pretty rusty. Now the "majiggers" on the module that stick straight up that the hoses slide down on (I think there may be about 7...I'm not for sure, I'll have to look) They are shiny and silver! Just one of the hoses are badly rusted to where you can't see ANY shiny silver. You reckon' this is what's causing it to stall? And is this electrical?....I will get some pictures of it and post it on here if that will help....show you what I'm talking about..I'll try and have the pics up as soon as possible. I also turned the throttle screw down some, I'm sure that's burning alot of gas everytime he does turn it up. Thanks!

Ya, a picture might help.
It sounds like you are talking about either a spark plug wirte or the coil wire. If it is the coil wire, yes it can cause the car to stall. If just a spark plug wire, that could cause a misfire, not a stall.
To help with rust, you can put a dab of silicone grease or De-electric grease on it.

Sorry for not having pictures posted up! I do have good news though...my car is running now! I had my mechanic friend to go driving with me all day last Sunday to see if the car would break down, but unfortunately, it didn't. BUT the next day, I went to start it up and it ran for about a second then died and wouldn't start. Luckily, it broke down right under my carport. So I had a my friend to come down to check it out and he done all the tests to the coil and module and figured that it was the "stater" (if that's the right name for it). What a mess! It started right up after installing a new module and stater. Used to be when I started the car up there would be this whining noise for about a second and then sound normal, but now after installing the stater and module, I don't hear it - even after letting the car sit over night I'll go and start it the next day and there's no whining noise, thankfully! I hope this solved the problem...I just hope and pray! Now, I do have an idling problem.....it seems to be idling with a little vibration and shakin' going on...nothing bad, but noticeable. That could be from bad spark plugs or wires (so I was told), but that's my next fix. Thanks, Karl!..I'll keep you updated and sorry for taking so long to respond.

I'm not sure how old all this is but ours is having similar issues. Tge difference is when we first start it, it stalls if you dont give it some gas immediatly or at times when going too slow. Going down the road today the it was running just fine one minute and then all of the sudden just stalled. Thought maybe fuel pump but gas was still getting up through so checked spark. Turns out there wasnt any. Somehow we lost spark. Tried the coil and didnt help. Going to have it towed to a shop but thougt I would see if anyone else had similar problems out there. Might be a long shot but ask them to check into all the relays and ignition as thats what we were told it would most likely hold a stalling problem like that. At tye least they could check spark or you could and see if its consistent. If you find anything out please post back. And I understand not getting rid of it. It rides so nice and I love my car or it would already be gone lol

Our car keeps dieing while going down the road. The car died one day and wouldn't restart. We foumd there was no spark and took it to the mechanic. He put a new ignition control module on that seemed to fix the problem. A couple days later it stalled going down the road again but started back up. Since then it has gotten worse. It will do it several times in a singal trip but generally only after the car has warmed up and has been driven for a while, the occasionally will do while idling. We cant seem to find a pattern to its stalling other than after it warms up. Other than that it could be idling, going through town, or even at highway speeds. We have since changed the spark plugs and wires, coil, ignition switch, fuel pump, gas tank, fuel filter, gas lines as there was a leak, clutch fan and thermostat as it did have an overheating problem, map sensor, and throttle position sensor. It has helped performance and idle some from a cold start but none of it has fixed the stalling. We tried jiggling wires to see if we could make it die but its never consistent. We are at a loss of what to do with this car. Sorry its so long but its our only car amd we need it running. When it does stall as long as you are going about 35 or over you can turn the kwy off and back on without engaging the starter and it usually starts right back up as if it had never stalled other than a strong gas smell and the occasional back fire. No stutter usually, just one minute its running, the next its not. It does seem to happen more if it is not kept at higher rpms such as coasting but higher rpms dont always help. Can anybody tell us what might be going on, the dang garage cant even figure it out because they wont take it down the road just put a scan on it that comes back as nothing wrong. Please Help

you need to find a shop that does more diagnostics than scan a vehicle. Depending on what your vehicle is, it may have to be driven with different diagnostic tools all hooked up at the same time. It makes a difference on whether it is fuel injected or carbureted. you may need a fuel pressure gauge, something hooked up to the coil input and output, Power and ground to the ignition module, they need to see what goes away when the vehicle dies. The best thing would be for the car to die and not restart so then you can see what's missing but on an intermittent problem you have to catch it when it happens. Since a shop has to pay for the time a tech spends on a vehicle, and that would make it very expensive, many shops don't want to spend too much time on something that may not show up when they are looking at it. It could be a poor ground connection to the module, to the engine or to the body.

It would be tough for a shop to find an intermittent that they can't make it happen when they are testing it. The more time they spend the higher the bill will be. Most of the time they say to bring it back when it gets worse. Problem is that it may not get worse. Just keep breaking down on you but then restarting again. Could be hazardous if it happens while driving in traffic. I wish I could be more help but I don't know what the shop did to try and solve your problem. I would try another shop though, to have some fresh eyes looking for the problem.
