'97 Suburban loud road noise 55-65mph

Unread post by lovesun » Wed Mar 02, 2011 3:46 pm

97 GMC Suburban has loud road noise driving 55-65 mph. It can get so loud you feel that the truck is vibrating but you don't feel any loss of control. CV joints replaced, no change. Tires replaced due to cupping, noise gone/lessened for about 100 miles, now it's back. Any ideas?

If the noise came back after new tires got 100 miles on them, check the tires for cupping. If they are, check your alignment and steering components. If not, i would next check the u-joints.

2003 GMC Yukon. My emergency brake works in reverse but not in drive. What could this be?

Most likely it is either out of adjustment or just worn down too far to function properly. If you remove the rear brake rotors, you can examine the parking brake shoes to see if they are worn, broken, or just out of adjustment. Check the inside of the brake rotor as well, if the surface where the emergency brake shoes contact is very corroded, or peeling, or rusted away, then you will need to replace everything.

be careful. torsion bars have all the pressure behind them as coil springs have. Unlike Chrysler torsion bars, GM's don't fully release with the adjusting bolt. You can take the adjusting bolt out and you will still not be able to take the torsion bar adjusting nut out of the frame bracket. If you try and pry out the adjusting nut you could very easily loose a finger. Gm has a tool (J36202) to lift up on the torsion bar lever and then remove the adjusting nut, then back off the lever and remove the torsion bar and lever. I know that some people have used an OTC type ball joint press to lift the torsion lever off the adjusting block but it's risky. What ever you do, never put your finger inside where the adjuster nut goes. If the torsion bar slips it will travel between the two sides of the cross member and easily cut a finger as the tension releases itself.

why are you taking the torsion bar out?

If you are close to an Autozone, I hear that they rent the torsion bar unloader tool. There are some for sale on ebay. Just do a search for J36202

I need more information...

what engine? 5.7? How does it start up? Long crank? start up right away? Starts and stutters? starts and idles okay but won't accelerate? Revs up in park but put in gear and stumbles? Can't be driven? Can be driven but runs rough? Start from the first time you noticed it wasn't normal and what happened from there...

old body style 2500 speedometer is not working and it doesn't shift properly I already replaced the sensor on the transfer case and the sensor on the side of the trans. Not sure what to try next any help would be great.

Is one of the sensors you replaced the vehicle speed sensor? If so, then it sounds like you have a wiring problem for the vehicle speed sensor, or the reluctor ring in the trans for the sensor is broken.
