2003 silverado shift problem

Unread post by rog61 » Mon Nov 05, 2012 12:03 pm

i lost 1st and 4th gear in my 03 1500 4.8 silverado, it has the 4l80e tranny with the 16 bolt pan. i checked the wireing going to the tranny, and all the fusses. i am going to replace all 4 controll solenoids, what do you think? the tranny has allso been makeing a loud buzzing sound for a long time now when its cold when you start it and when it shifts, any ideas?

First off, you would have a 4L60 trans, not a 4L80 in your truck. The buzzing noise sounds like a possible bad trans fluid pump and/or torque converter. I doubt replacing any solenoids is going to fix your problem, as it's rarely an electrical/solenoid issue on those transmissions. You've more than likely got some internal damage that has caused 1st and 4th gear to go. You would be looking at a disassembly and teardown to really determine the cause. If you have had a pump failure, debris has gone completely through the trans including the torque converter...same if the torque converter is about to fail. I'd be willing to say you're going to need a complete overhaul.

well i replaced both shift solenoids, the converter lock up solenoid, and the converter clutch pwm solenoid and the tranny works like new, plus no more noise. well you had one thing right, i do have the 4l60e not the 4l80e, thank you protech.

My truck will only drive in first & second gear, and reverse

Unread post by ashleydeveau » Tue Feb 12, 2013 5:44 pm

My 2003 chevy silverado was stuck in snowbank, I shifted into neutral and dropped it into 4 high. When I shifted back to drive the engine reeves as if in neutral. The truck will only drive in 1 gear 2 gear and reverse. What could my problem be?

Looks like you've smoked the transmission, probably a band or clutch pack. Either way, the trans will have to come out, be taken apart and diagnosed. Good luck.
