I doubt this a problem with the actual shifter mechanism, but more likely an internal transmission problem. The weather would not affect the shifter on the column or the shift cable, but it can affect the inside workings of the transmission.

This type of problem would really require you to get the transmission checked out by a professional. If there is an internal problem, expect the trans to have to be removed and taken apart to find the exact cause. This can get quite expensive, especially for an older car that might not be worth that much.

You might be better off just finding a good used transmission and having it installed.
