1996 grand prix special edition when you start it up in the morning,if you put it in drive does not go into gear slowly the car moves and when your at 3500 to 4000 rpm it finally goes into gear and the car is driveable.all gears shift fine.once the car has been driven for a few minutes it also shifts fine for the rest of the trip.the car although was started up and driven once in a while did sit for 9 years.also if you make a compete stop on a hill, when you accelerate it does slip into first then again drives and shifts fine......help!!!

one thing to check is your voltage on your trans fuse. TCC (CRUISE) fuse (15A) in the underhood fuse panel. Your vehicle has known problems with the ignition switch not allowing a good contact for voltage to get through. Don't go out and buy an ignition switch, test it first. You could have another problem. So check you voltage to the fuse while you are driving and see if the voltage drops below battery voltage, check the switch.

you would need to hook up a volt meter that has leads that can reach into the cab.

what can happen is the contacts in the ignition switch arc every time you turn the switch on. Some times, where there might be excessive arcing the contacts will have a very small portion of the contact area burn and then not get a good contact point. The poor contact adds resistance to the circuit and can reduce the voltage through the circuit. Sometimes the circuit will work fine other times it won't.

you could also use a scanner and drive the car and see what the scanner shows the data is doing.

you have already checked the fluid level and fluid condition right?
