1997 chevy k1500 Vortec 5.7L.
Repairs= new alternator, repaired broken headlight wires at the
connector in the tilt wheel (burnt), disassembled headlight switch and
cleaned copper connections. Looking for a switch diagram showing
pin assignments.
Question = headlight wires broke at connector in the tilt wheel,
repaired the spade terminals, still no running lights (dash lights,
taillights and front running lights. I DO have brake and turn signal
lights front and rear.  When I use a jumper wire at the headlight
switch connector, I can get all of the missing circuits to light, I even
hear the fuel pump kick on when idiot light circuit lights.  HOW CAN I
TEST THE SWITCH before paying a Benjamin on a roll  of the dice?
Also, new alternator is not charging. Please help, JHB.
You've solved your own problem with the light problem! When you
jumped the connector at the headlight switch and everything worked,
that should have told you immediately that the headlight switch is
faulty. I'd replace it and your problems should be solved. As for the
alternator not charging, I would first make sure you have a known
good part. You can have any alternator tested at a larger parts store
chain. If the alternator is tested as good, then you have a problem
with the computer not turning the alternator 'on'. Check the signal wire
from the PCM to the alternator. It's either a wiring issue or a bad
computer, as long as the alternator is showing good.
