Problem with my = 1989 Corvette
Engine size = 5.7L TPI
question = I was replacing the battery and for some stupid reason I
was pulling on the positive battery cable (for slack) and I heard a
pop. After the pop sound, lights would come on but the starter would
not engage. I thought I broke the positive battery cable, so I replaced
it, but still no starter. I had a mobile mechanic come to my house and
he said it got turn over "by crossing" the starter wires?? He said
there is something wrong with the alarm? Some code in the key that I
would have go to a dealer to get fixed? Could this be?
The part about the alarm, or security system makes sense. This car
has a chip in the key. The ignition lock cylinder reads the key chip and
allows the car to start. A common problem in this system is a broken
wires on the back of the ignition cylinder, inside the steering column.
But that would not explain the pop you heard just before the no start
condition. Be sure to check all fuses. You may have blown a fee fuses
or a fusible link that power the alarm system.
