1996 Chevy Caprice classic 4.3 v8 265Cid check engine light.
Replaced all new 02 sensors (4).
Question = Hi, and thanks for your time, bought this car
today, noticed the car was stalling after putting it in park or also while
in N-and drive, if left idling for a little while. Now when I say stall there
is no hesitation at all just completely shuts down-car only has 104k
on it and was owned by old timer mechanic. He also told me he
changed the ignition switch and ignition module? Replaced all 02
sensors(4). Took car to auto zone, checked it w/ code reader-no
codes came up-no warning lights on dash. Took car to p/u dinner
and now have a check engine light on dash! EGR or fuel pump or
bad cats? Going back to AZ in morning to scan codes again to see
what comes up. Nny simple (notorious) fix it ideas???? Thanks.
Answer doubt your problem is a fuel pump, those usually don't cause
stalls, it will either not start or crank very long before starting when
you have low or no fuel pressure. The EGR valves were problematic
on the V8 Caprice, but those would usually have symptoms like a
hesitation on accelerate or stumble while driving. If it stuck open, it
can cause a stall issue, but that's all just best guesses. The check
engine light would have checked out and codes pulled to further
diagnose. I suppose the guy you bought the car from could have tried
to cover up bad/clogged catalytic converters by putting the new O2
sensors in. That would have bought some time until you drove it some
more. You might want to check for any other possible vacuum leaks,
and ignition problems. That's really all that would cause the car to
stall out.
