question = I have a 2001 chevy venture.I was given one key and like a
dope I didn't make an extra. That key was lost about three weeks ago.I
need a new one and my husband refuses to get it towed to a
dealership. They told me I would have to have it towed in to have the key
cut and
programmed,is this true.I have had problems in the past  of being given
incorrect information so they can make a buck off of me. Is there anyway to
have the key replaced without having it towed in. And yes it has a
transponder chip in it. Isn't there any way to disable the key computer
system?

JK:
After getting a new key, you can try this procedure.....
To get a key, you will need to give the parts dept. your VIN #, show proof of
ownership, and photo ID.

With a master passkey III key (Black), turn ON the ignition, with the engine
OFF.
Observe the Security telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will
turn off.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.

You must now turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

Start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder
information and the PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.
If this does not work, you will need the dealer to use their scanner.
